They appeared in the middle of four guards, of all the luck.

Regina didn’t hesitate a second, and she ran one through while everyone else was frozen a split second by surprise.

She spat out a silence spell and released it, even as she dodged out of the center of the four men, one of them already skewered and dying on Regina’s sword.

The other three guards yelled, or at least their mouths opened and they tried to, but there was no sound while they drew swords.

A light bolt pulsed from Sophia’s and Anne’s hands, taking down two of the guards silently. Fortunately, they were just guards, and not men of power.

The last one turned and ran toward the dungeon exit, and she launched her own light bolt that hit him in the back, and the spell took him silently to his death as he fell to the ground.

She shook her head in disbelief as she lowered the blanket of silence.

“I wonder what they were doing there, standing in the damned dungeon hallway like that.”

She heard an unfamiliar voice, “Guarding us, they didn’t like it when you all went missing under their noses. They have no idea how you pulled it off. They put us all down here, when we refused to swear fealty the third time.”

It occurred to her she was feeling over twenty auras of power, of various spheres. Twenty-three to be exact.

She sighed, “Your husbands are gone?”

The woman laughed bitterly, “Beheaded in front of us. I’m baroness Stephanie, by the way.”

She looked over at the woman who stepped from the shadows of the cell into the torchlight. She had dark brown hair, brown eyes, and looked quite young. She must’ve been recently married too, she was no more than a year past the age of consent, and her magic was still initiate level.

She closed her eyes, and nodded, “Listen, I know the church hasn’t endeared itself to the nobility in… let’s say ever, but all our men are dead as well. Would you all like to stay here, or join the seventy-three clerics and six paladins in hiding? We’re working on a way to fight back, and if you ever want to reclaim your birthrights our best chance is to work together. If it helps, I have no intention of seeing the church rule over Nysten again, not alone at any rate. We can build something better and stronger from the ashes.”

Stephanie snorted, “You had us at not staying here.”

There were several murmurs of agreement from other cells.

She just nodded. She’d hoped they’d feel that way about it, but she hadn’t been sure. There was a lot of bitterness at the church she was certain, and didn’t delude herself into believing they trusted her, not yet anyway. But at the least, her way was the lesser of two evils, the Gira Dynasty was monstrous.

She also realized running into them was doubly a blessing. Not just to free them and have them join their resistance against the invaders, although she would’ve come merely for that, but for the current mission as well.
